Sprouts
Several months ago I posted information about the super-delicious way my brother and his wife prepare salmon with rosemary. Rosemary they pluck from a bush in their yard. I wasn't kidding when I said it was some of the best salmon I've ever had. So delicious in fact that we have already started our own rosemary bush! The seeds went into the starter tray on the 6th and we had our first sprouts at 9 days!
I'm excited because I think this will make a perfectly suitable plant for our high desert landscaping and because I love the taste and smell of rosemary and hope this will motivate me to explore more dishes that utilize it. I'm also interested in how well the plant might do here. According to what I've read, our winters are too harsh and I'll have to keep it in a planter that can moved indoors during the winter months if I want it to survive. My brother, in Boise, Idaho, experiences similar weather and his seems to be thriving. This will be my little horticultural experiment.
If any of you also have rosemary plants please comment and let me know what your climate is and how the plant fares for you!

Springing forward
Sunday evening...the first day of Daylight Savings...I made gin and tonics for Todd and myself. The warm weather, the lingering daylight and a walk with the dogs...it felt like SPRING! While we were enjoying our beverages I decided to check up on the Reno Aces and, to my delight, see that their season opens soon!!
Here is a link to the official Reno Aces blog. I love it because it has great information about the Aces, baseball, and Reno. Comment here if you're going to any of the Aces games...maybe I'll see you there!

Gratitude Day
I learned on Sunday afternoon...which was a plenty wonderful day...that our favorite neighbors are not moving away as we had feared! It is definitely a reason to celebrate! And it makes me take a moment to be grateful for some really wonderful people and events in my life.
You'll be happy to hear that my uncle Wally (of snickerdoodle cookie fame) is recovering very nicely from his recent heart attack. He met with his doctor yesterday and was given a clean bill of health. Probably better off now than before the heart attack. Funny how life can work that way.
My neighbor Thomas is coming home from his National Guard deployment today. The balloons and banners in his front yard make me unbelievably happy.
My friend Regina and her husband Travis just celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary yesterday. It is so heartwarming and such an inspiration to see a couple that, after so many years, is still so much in love and so kind to one another.
My very funny friend Judy is at a new phase in her cancer treatment. Do I wish her situation were better? Absolutely. Am I grateful that she is feeling a bit better? Very. Or that I have been blessed with her friendship in the first place? Without a doubt. Am I grateful every day for what she is teaching me by her very humor and grace about facing adversity? More than words can say.
I am grateful for the clients I have and the business I am doing. I work with a lot of really great people committed to making real estate transactions go smoothly. Here's a shout out to the Realtors, title and escrow folks, the appraisers, the inspectors and the buyers and sellers that make my job so great!
And who wouldn't be happy about this? It looks like Coco (and her bee) are here to stay!

Client Surprise
My job is awesome! Sure, I work any and every day of the week. Sure, there are frustrations with appraisals, inspections, addenda, etc. But then there are days like yesterday. We lost an hour with the Daylight Savings Time change and I stayed up too late the night before chatting with a new old friend (that's a story for another post!) so I was sleeping in. My phone rang. It was a number I didn't recognize so I let it go to voicemail. I thought I'd just go back to sleep but knowing there was a message on there was too large a distraction. So I got up, got my coffee, grabbed my laptop and set about real estate.
Bill and his wife were visiting Reno from the San Francisco bay area. He wanted to know if I was available to show them some houses. Part of me was irked...Sunday morning with no warning? But I checked my website (www.jerianne.rnohomes.com) and saw that he'd been reviewing listings in the area for several months. I pulled together a list of properties to view, invited my husband to join us, and headed out.
I'm sure it didn't hurt that it was all blue skies and sunshine and a couple of the properties were right on the river...but I attribute the lovely outing to Bill and his wife. They could not have been better company! I'm hoping they buy in our area not just because that is my job but because I would love to get to know these people better. Their humor and kindness would only serve to make Reno a better place!

Run or Dye
Evidently I'm going to run a Run or Dye 5K in early June. My husband and some co-workers were talking about various events, this one was mentioned, someone pulled up the website and saw a discounted entry fee for teams and before I knew it I was part of team Los Hobos. I sound crankier about that than I really am. I enjoy events and having that on the calendar is a training carrot dangling in front of me. I got home late yesterday after a very long day (a string of them actually) and even though the couch and some wine sounded perfect, I instead thought of June 1, strapped on my shoes and headed for the dreadmill. I mean Treadmill! 6 miles later I was SO very glad I made that choice. Thank you fellow Hobos for dragging me along!

Gardnerville gem
Just a quick post of gratitude to my clients Robert and Tara on the purchase of their new home. They were dream clients...realistic expectations, prompt response to calls and requests for documents and signatures, patient, and friendly. An agent really couldn't ask for more! I look forward to getting back down to Gardnerville to enjoy the spectacular view of the mountains with them!

Pizza Balls
No...no...no... Pizza balls are NOT how you tell the boy pizzas from the girl pizzas. They are tasty little crowd pleasers that my friend Regina found a recipe for earlier today. I didn't have anything else planned for dinner and the recipe looked pretty darned simple. I think this would be a great recipe for kids to make (with supervision, of course) because it is fun to assemble and can be customized to suit a child's palate. We made ours according to the recipe but you could spice them up or make them milder for younger family members.
Ingredients:
2 cans Pillsbury Buttermilk Biscuits (8 large biscuits per can)
96 pepperoni slices
1 pound of Colby cheese (or your preference)
1 beaten egg
Parmesan
Italian seasoning*
Garlic powder
1 jar pizza sauce**
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Cut the block of cheese into 32 squares. Flatten a biscuit out and stack 2 pepperoni/cheese cube/2 pepperoni/cheese cube/2 pepperoni on top. Gather up the edges of the biscuit and pinch together. Place the biscuits, pinched edge down, on a greased baking sheet. They will look like large dumplings. Brush with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with Parmesan, Italian seasoning and garlic powder. Bake for 18-20 minutes. Serve with the pizza sauce for dipping.
* If you don't have prepared Italian seasoning you can make your own by combining equal parts basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary and thyme.
** We made our preferred pizza sauce rather than using the store-bought variety. The recipe was posted here recently.

Coco!
My husband and I have owned dogs and cats over the years and shortly after we moved to Sparks our old, old cat Tootie passed away. For over a year now we have been pet-less. And we have struggled with the idea of getting another animal. Our solution has been to pet-sit for friends and family. We get to love a sweet animal and then go back to our normal routine. While satisfying, it hasn't stopped us from searching Petfinder or craigslist for border collies and Australian shepherds...our breeds of choice.
We're pet sitting a beauty named Coco right now and she is the reason we'd consider getting another dog of our own. She is gorgeous, has a delightful demeanor and is so smart it is scary! She is also a great running companion and has already gotten us out for a walk we hadn't planned. Dean Koontz was right: Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one is a life diminished.
